How was this fade effect applied to this picture

Posted 20 September 2009 - 11:44 AM

If you look closely at the outta edge of the left side and the top of the graphic you can see the image is slightly faded I've tried to add a layer ontop of the image and use the gradient tool and adjust opacity with no success.

Here is a live example of the image and I've also uploaded the image from their site.

This effect was applied by having a black layer above the image with a layer mask that had a large blurred oval in the center of the layer mask. This will then apply the blured effect.

Another way that this can be accomplished is by having the image on the first layer. on the second layer create a marquee around the whole image. On the top tool options bar you can make this marquee blurred. (this value should be played around with) On a new layer right click and reverse the selection. now fill this with a black or darker color and adjust the layers opacity. It may give you a better effect if you copy this layer, drop the opacity on both layers further and give the second layer a multiply property

cheers

in order to blur the marque you need to change the pixel value in the top toolbar. I'm about to start working on a psd for you. It should be up in a bit.

Ok, have created the psd which is zipped on my server. I'm not sure if the selection I saved will be in the psd , if not, press M so your top toolbar is set to marquee mode. enter a value of 50 into the feather value. Now press CTRL + A or Command + A on the keyboard to select the entire canvas. right click within the selection and go to select inverse. Now create a new layer and fill the selection with black. the boarders should be faded in black. you can multiply this layer and change the oppacity to get your desired darkness. Also, you can set this new layer to multiply to recieve a cool effect.

This is the pattern I'm working with to achieve the effect. #6c6344 This is the color I'm trying to fade the pattern into, I downloaded your PSD and did exactly what you did and when I tried to right click selection it said no pixels have been selected even tho the I tried the same thing on both of the layers in your PSD so if possible is there anyway you can apply the effect to the link I've attached I'd really appreciate it. I've been trying to find help to do this for 3 weeks and every1 claiming to do it hasn;t been able to get it right. I really appreciate your help though. Thanks http://www.tnach.123.../option9tan.jpg

pressing control a will select the whole canvas so then selecting inverse will not select anything.

The way to do it is using the image calebj supplied, create a new layer and then select the marquee tool, change the feather value to around 50% and then draw a rectangle covering around 60% of your canvas then select inverse and fill the selected area black.

hope that worked for you.
