Since I mentioned this last, we haven't been shutting the computer down, just logging off & keeping the power on. A couple days ago I shut it down. Now it's back to turning itself off randomly. Usually when I'm in the middle of something. But it doesn't display the rectangles now, the screen just goes black & then says "no signal"

Did your pc take a knock at all that may have started these problems?

& when you try to turn caps lock on, what happens. Does it respond?

I would take the side of the computer & check for Bad Capacitors. If none on the motherboard are bad, there maybe some in the power supply unit that have failed.

Be sure that their is no virus(boot viruse) because you said that when you shut it down the problems came back format hard drive and reinstall OS is the best option to know that.
And if its not the case of virus then

But it doesn't display the rectangles now, the screen just goes black & then says "no signal"

The monitor shows this message "NO SIGNAL" when it stop getting VGA signal it can cause by many ways
The vga cable from your monitor to motherbord's is not connected,or open or the monitor is damaged , but thats not the case as you said above the system is showing sign of errors(beeps) and your monitor is displaying sometimes so at first the problem goes to any addon Graphic Card unplug it and use the internal VGA of motherbord if still their is problem then check the RAM if its loose then this can happen (may be the ram is not causing the error as you said caps lock is working but then also check it) else its the problem in the chipset(North/*South Bridge) then you have to change the motherboard.

One more thing it can cause for BIOS try to reset the settings you can also restore the CMOS chip by changing the jumper on your mother board see on your motherboard's manual how to do it.

Hope the problem ends soon
Good Luck

The long beeps indicate that there is a problem in your RAM. Maybe its become static. The best thing to do is place your RAM in an anti-static bag or use an eraser to rub against the gold plates of your RAM. This has worked for me as i had the same problem as yours.
