Linux red hat

Post icon  Posted 28 September 2009 - 12:33 PM

Hi, so I`m going to buy a laptop and i`m determined that I`ll install Linux on it.The point is that our teacher in programming gave us CDs with borland C++ builder and Linux red hat.I used Linux ubunto for a very brief period, what i`m trying to say is it a good idea to start Linux with red hat or I should stick to something less complex( I actually have not seen red hat yet) if yes what should i begin with ?

The only real difference between Red Hat & Ubuntu is that they are different distrobutions. This means they are the same Linux kernel, just packaged with different software. So if you were not married to the apt-get package manager, then rpm should work just fine for you :)

Afaik red hat is a server based distribution and it costs around 80$. The free equivalent of red hat is Fedora.
The discs you probably have is an old version of Red hat, when they were free, and if I'm right you better stay with Ubuntu, or install Fedora.

There is not really difference between all the linux distributions, just that they install different "by default" software, and have different package managers, but all of them based on the same kernel, the Linux Kernel.

no2, don't u think aptget and rpm are strong words for a newbie?
hc, i like fedora because when i installed it, i could start c/c++ dev straight up. ubuntu told me to do an apt get for a package before i use c++.
i prefer blue (fedora) over brown(ubuntu).
you can try puppy linux first to be neutral then compare

If anyone has followed any walk through on Ubuntu, then apt-get should look familiar. Comparing that to rpm should tell you that rpm == apt-get. I didn't find it that much of a stretch of ones imagination, no.

Plus there is Google.
