So I got this email at work (he wants it spread, and theres nothing official in it, so I guess it's okay) that says

Quote

Ladies and Gentlemen,

BIG NEWS !!!

If you utilize government vehicles, or your own private vehicle for
official business, please note that President Obama signed an executive
order last night that covers texting while driving for Federal employees.

"The order covers federal employees when they are using
government-provided cars or cellphones and when they are using their own
phones and cars to conduct government business".

....

I got this same message as a text, not an email.

Sucked too, because I took so long reading it that I took out a mail box & rear ended an ice-cream truck. :(

Even without texting, people are all over their lanes (and sometimes mine), they come over without a blinker and just make outright stupid moves.

Do you live in Alabama?

people tend to have lots of rules at 16 that at broken by the time they are 18 or 20.

YOU WILL NOT BE AN EXCEPTION.

I'm not saying I will be, but I'm not going to do something stupid like text while driving (even if my parents and the government didn't have rules/laws about it). IMHO, i'd rather not have higher insurance premiums or additional repair costs for my car (when I get one) or my parents' cars. And that's just the monetary costs for my stuff. Don't forget anyone else's property and/or body that I may damage in the process of distracted driving. It just isn't worth it.

Saddly when this happens, it will most likely not be your fault, but they still rasie insurance rates because they say you are "Automatically 10% at fault just for being there in the first place" :(

Welcome to the teenage world. A world where texting is king. Car crashes are its right hand man.

I'll admit to having txted while driving before but I don't do it often and usually call someone if they text me and I'm driving and don't talk for long, especially now since it has been illegal to txt and drive here for about a year.

I am not stupid and am a exceptional driver.
I've never been in a wreck and actually avoided one when some dumb ass pulled out onto the highway about 20 ft in front of me while I was going about 60 mph...I had to honk my horn and slam on brakes while trying to steer away from them while another car was coming head on in the other lane...the idiot hit their brakes when I honked my horn instead of speeding up and moving away...needless to say I avoided a wreck and didn't even spill my drink(that I was holding) while I added some skid marks to the road.
They were probably texting while driving.

People in general really do suck at driving

Here in New Zealand as of the 1st of October, it is now illegal to text while driving - and also illegal to hold the phone to your ear and talking while driving. The only way to legally talk on the phone is to either have handsfree, or pull over and talk (or text). Studies here have shown that the consentration of talking or txting on the mobile is very similar to being drunk, and the second (or 3rd) most cause of accidents is people not concentrating because they're yacking away. There have been a couple of horrific (and deadly) crashes caused my lose of concentration because the driver was on the mobile - one I remember is a car doing a U turn, and turn right in front of a truck doing 100kph (60mph). All occupants of the car (4 of them) died instantly.

If a cop catches you talking away down the motorway (another word for Highway) or txting on the phone - then its an automatic $150 fine and 3 or 5 demerits on your licence. Basically, our demerits are a point system, if you get 100 or more within 2 years (we get them for anything - speeding which starts at 20 demerits and goes up depending how much over the posted limit you are.., drunk driving etc)- you loose your licence for 3 months, and if your caught driving without a licence - you get the car taken away for 30 days.

I think its a good thing. As I see it, is the txt or phone call really that important to start endagering other users of the road, and yourself? Its not hard to wait until you have stopped or pull over. Its just as much of the fault of you if you were on the phone or txting, and a car pulls out in front of you and you smash into the side of them. As if you wernt on the phone, you might have seen them earlier and taken action to avoid them (or the person who suddenly stepped out onto the road).

Just my 0.02 cents.
