Mandriva Linux

Posted 05 October 2009 - 02:55 PM

I finally got my WUSB300N Linksys wireless adapter to work..by using Mandriva Linux ONE edition. Im finding it a bit hard to get used too as im fairly familiar with Ubuntu and this is a tad bit different. Example..i went into "Konsole" and typed sudo su and was told that sudo was not a command (i figured out that su works the way sudo su works) Well now im having a hard time because i want to run gedit from the konsole...i installed gedit but now i recieve an error when trying to run the program.

No protocol specified

(gedit:9765): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: 0.0

And thats just the beginning...I've personally never seen anyone using mandriva..and to be honest this whole Linux doesnt like my wirless adapter is becoming quite a b!tch...and a big pain in the @$$. so if i can make Mandriva work the way i want it to..then i might be happy..otherwise, im probably just going to say !@#$ it and put XP on this box and install VirtualBox and run Ubuntu on that instead.

sorry too busy bitching and moaning to get to the question:

Is there a way to run gedit from the Konsole?

First off, why do you want to run gedit from the console? Alt+F2 should give you a quicker way of running gedit, firefox, and any other graphical app that you know the name of.

Second, it looks like the console doesn't know which display to use, so you'll have to tell the environment which console to use. I don't rightly know how to do this without sitting at my Linux box @ home, so Google it.

I have used Mandriva, but my home PC is actually a Mythbuntu box, with some desktop-y things tacked on. It really is a pain trying to do anything other than watch stuff on a 28" CRT.. yeah, it's old, and yeah, I'm cheap. :D

Spend some time learning your Desktop environment, then start tooling around on the command line. Mandriva is pretty mature now, not like when I first started using it, when it was Mandrake 8.1. Even then, I didn't need to spend a lot of time on the command line. Slackware introduced me to that.
