My Comp +Developing = Unbuntu

Posted 08 October 2009 - 12:55 PM

Hiya, Haff CAffs here, anyway, I was looking through post, and noticed alot of Unbuntu Userbars (The little bars that Say "Unbuntu User") and was wondering 3 things.

1. Is Unbuntu a good OS, developer wise too?

2. Can I still use my Visual Studio on Unbuntu?

3. I dont want to get rid of my windows, so I was thinking Dual Boot, but im not sure if my cmop can handle it ( Still getting to know the computer physically, i know all basic hardware, dont know much about it internally besides common things.) Here are My Computer Specs , and this christmas i'm getting (90% sure ^_^) Im getting a bundle of taddons i found (Call it my HaffCaff Package ^_^, WD 500gb internal hard drive, ATI Raedon HD graphics card, and 2 more gigs of ram)
and i know ill be able to dual then, but i REALLY dont want to wait that long to try it out, so Im wondering if it will work now?

I searched google, and saw Unbuntu is actually a pretty good OS, but I want Developers/Programmers points of view too

I'm afraid I can't speak to your first or third questions(as all my Ubuntu installs are servers) - but because Linux is a different operating system than Windows, you will not be able to use Visual Studio on it without setting up something like WINE.

No, you can't use visual studio on Ubuntu, as a beginner in coding I love my Linux platform. They do have an IDE called Code::Blocks which acts cirtually the same as VS, and infact im more inclined to use Code::Blocks than VS, but because my current class requires VS I have to use Windows aswell.

Ubuntu, is shweet. Also you can try it out using a liveboot and see if you like it or not, and it can be installed next to windows, it will partition your hard drive to whatever amount fo space you wanna dedicate to it and when you boot your computer it will give the option of windows or ubuntu through the GRUB screen

You boot a computer, load an ide or text editor, & begin coding. The OS is really transparent at that point. If you are developing for Linux or Unix, then Ubuntu will work just fine. If you are planning on writing code that runs on Windows, then Ubutnu is probably a bad choice. If you are doing web work, well then it's really just a question of preference.

Every distro of Linux comes with gcc. What you are trying to do is much more important that what developers & programmers on the internet will suggest.

Linux is nice and if your planning on developing cross platform it would definitely help make sure it is compatible with linux.

Microsoft would never let their app run on linux :/

Oh ok. I tried it out with live boot and installed inside windows. It wasnt bad, noticed alot of it is still terminal/command line, and its something im not used too. I'll stick with windows now, but I will definietly be using Linux in the future.
