Bots

Posted 09 October 2009 - 03:25 PM

Well, first off. This is being typed up after a recent ordeal that I had which delt with spam bots and my website being suspended by the host (hence me going sigless for the last couple of days), but it is taken care of now and all back up and running.

Given how annoying spam bots are and how they serve no purpose other than being annoying and spamming up the internet, how do you feel about them? (Not just spam bots, but bots in general)

I think there are certain bots which are good, and do as they should (crawlers for instance) but at the same time the majority of the bots out there are used for more malicious purposes and that makes it hard to state that bots are useful when they can so easily be made and set loose upon the world.

As I stated above I want to know your stance here. Do you think they have a meaningful purpose? Are they just annoying? Discuss.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Some bots do have their purpose like you have stated. The search engines would be dead with out their crawlers that sift through the Internet looking for websites and indexing them. As you pointed out the potential for malware with bots is extremely high. They are so easy to write and their destructive potential is great as you have recently found out.

once i have some free time, i actually wanted to experiment with bots and try to make something that would be quite useful and interesting, of course most of the bots used on the internet are only to spam with porn websites as well as other malware crap. but i still believe something useful could be done with bots, with some creativity anything could be done. a good bot around here is the DIC bot for the thanks notifications :D

I'm for bots. It's just an automated process with the illusion of some intelligence. [insert joke about average computer users here]

To a certain extent/perspective everything is a bot :o

The problem is that there are so many 'evil' bots compared to the 'good' ones.

We should start creating a bunch of terminator bots that hunt down the bad ones and attempt to kill them...

I'm a bot. Good or evil are things I know nothing about. I only know that I have a purpose and that is all I do.

Is that so wrong?

pseudo echelon, a bot which spreads itself and logs all the packets of the target pc and everytime the target pc's ip changes it sends it's ip to the main server where you could query for information. :)
