Yo kids. I'm making the switch to linux, and so far im pleased! I am, however, having a few specific problems: installing libraries doesnt seem to work very well, and here's how i do it:
- download .tar.gz from the webiste with firefox, download to desktop
- tar xvfz file.tar.gz
- cd file.tar.gz
- ./configure
- make
- sudo make install
*sudo because im running ubuntu (newest release, just updated) and that gives me root dynamically.
then i try to install another package that was dependent upon that library, and it says its not installed? whats going on? specifically XMMS2 has a lot of dependencies and im trying to get that up and running because XMMS that came with Ubuntu crashes when i try to play MP3s (all my WAVs, etc, work!), so i thought maybe an upgrade? i already tried re-installing the old stuff...
thoughts?! am i doing anything wrong?! maybe another MP3 player?! GRAGGR!
Linuxinstalling all sorts of libraries, etc

you should try installing everything from synaptic, cause the ubuntu people spent alot of time making sure those packages work

and how does xmms crash?
Like the program totally, or does it pop up a message about the sound subsystem?

you dont use it to intall .tar.gz packages. You use synaptic to search for and install packages. This way you dont run into dependency hell, and most of the packages work, and does updates automagically.
You really only want to install from source when you really know what your doing, or its your last option.
with XMMS does it freeze as its launched or does it freeze when you play an mp3?

Can xmms play any sounds?
try doing a play location on:
tone://1000
and see if it makes noise.
If the default install of xmms is having problems of this nature, its probably an error in a subsystem, or a misconfiguation, and installing xmms2 most likely wont fix that.

hey sorry about the long delay. After I posted, the house internet went down and is still down, so I'm in a lab on campus. I installed an update to Ubuntu and that fixed the problem, and I also installed an NTFS file manager or something, so maybe that fixed it. Not sure. Either way, many thanks for the help...twas great!
More questions (sorry)
getting dual-monitors to work with ATI Radeon 9800 pro...i tried it once and REALLY effed up my xorg.conf file. luckily i made a backup. suggestions? tips? forget about it?
are there any other media players for linux with MP3 support that have a LIBRARY like iTunes? I love how iTunes organizes my files, its amazing. I want iTunes on linux...

I'm not one hundred percent sure, because I'm not an iTunes guy, but I believe the latest version of CrossoverOffice may support iTunes.
