how can i reuse already downloaded codecs in ubuntu 8.10

Posted 17 October 2009 - 09:56 AM

Hi
i am new to ubuntu os.. i have installed ubuntu 8.10 recently... at present i have xp and ubuntu running in dualmode in my machine...

after installing ubuntu, i have downloaded some codecs and vlc player for playing mp3s and dvd movies..

now i am planning to install ubuntu9.04... but my fear is, if i install 9.04, then what if i lost all my downloded codecs..
do i need to download the codecs again ?

is there any way so that i can copy all of them in to a folder and again can i copy back them after installing 9.04... :(

also can any one tell me in which folder all my downloaded codecs will go? i checked in places->computer->filesystem->etc folder and in some other folders also...
but i didn't find vlc folder or any other folder that contains downloaded codecs...
where do the downloaded files gets stored?

one more thing... this is my first time i am posting in dreamincode using ubuntu[more precisely other than xp]..some thing to cheer about my self :)

thanks for any help

Hi,
when i did some search on google, i found this link

http://www.ubuntugee...tu-install.html

but i am not clear whether this technique saves only names of the packages that i downloaded or will it saves codecs also?

because i have very limited download limit.. i am using low bandwidth connection.. so it takes lot of time for me to download all the codecs again...

so is there any way so that i can use my downloaded codecs in the newer ubuntu version that i am planning to install

today i received a ubuntu9.04 livecd (i requested a live cd in their site a few days back)

in my machine i have ubuntu 8.10 at present.. is there any way so that i can directly upgradeto 9.04 instead of uninstalling 8.10 and again reinstalling 9.04..
because i have downloaded somecodecs when i am using 8.04 for playing mp3s etc as i mentioned in the previous post
i want to use those codecs in 9.04 also
can any one suggest me a best way that i can opt for ..

apt-get dist-upgrade

that command will upgrade all packages and your distro to the latest version. Sometimes this can be problematic but for most users it goes off without a hitch. Also. google medibuntu.

thanks galorin,
but i think, if i use apt-get dist-upgrade, then it will start downloading from ubuntu's repository...
but i dont have too much download limit...
that is why i want to upgrade from live cd..
is there any way so that i can upgrade my 8.10 to 9.04 using livecd
thanks for help
