New Personal (kinda) Website

Posted 21 October 2009 - 05:15 PM

Yo

So I've been putting this off for a while what with MageUK disappearing and stuff but I've finally started work on the rebuild of my website.

I don't believe in Splash pages, coming soon, nor leaving an old un-functional website online whilst I'm building personal websites so it's just straight up on the domain.

It's obviously not finished, but it's got some neat stuff going on in the background which will be released to the public for you all to enjoy! Including the LanguageLayer and the BitBlogEngine (which is basically a miniature blogging system based off the BitsyBlog codebase for self-contained websites).

Anyway, let me know what you think *so far*.. Comments like "Well there's not much there" or "LOL IT DUS NOT TEH WERKING" don't help in any way - Thanks.

Ok I like the general layout of the site. I have some comments about the style. First off get rid of that red border around the footer. It's very distracting and doesn't go with the rest of your site.

Second, make a footer. This meaning, a different color with some information in it.

Third thing I would do is make a background color around the main body of your document and then keep the blue around the outer background.

Other than that I really like the navigation style and the twitter update below it that's pretty neat. That's all for now

Cheers
Mark

Aw, what happened to MageUK?

On-topic: The language flags don't seem to be doing any translating.

I pointed this out to him via Twitter :

@akroncdnr Nah, I just couldn't think of anything witty to put there so used non-translated text =D

Yeah I should have mentioned the header is the only thing that's "permanant", the flags and the red border are just a test so I had some buttons to change the language.

+ Yes, changing the language doesn't change the homepage title nor the image.

Will have some more of it updated shortly for you to take a look at and comment on :)

I like the look. I'm guessing your doing a slider thing on the top left which is looking good. I like the menu its simple and nice.

Bookmarking your site when I'm home so that I can keep whatching it evolve.

To a beginner, I like the overall color scheme, however, I would try to make the navigation a little more prominent, as it took me a few seconds to distinguish where it was.

As for the advertisements, or what would appear to be an advertisement, are you able to perhaps shift it elsewhere? Having Navigation->Ad->Body is a little confusing.

Other than that, my noob mind is impressed by the language layer even though it is going? And also, the twitter update is great (Even though I dont use twitter :P)

Good job :D

Well it's not *too* much of an issue.. See below :)

The 2 buttons on the left are advertisements (of sort), I'm still not certain what to put in them.

With regards to the boxes on the left, they're more Navigation than Advertisement. The tabs I'm having are "Cedita.labs" (which is basically some of the free software that will be under the Software menu), Freelancing (with brief overview of rates n stuff) and then Tutorials. So once you click one of the tabs and change the big image, you can click the big image and go straight to the page, it's pretty much a second menu for the most important parts.

You should use jQuery for the ads bit as it can make it into a sexy slider/tabs.

Work's finally picked up a litt.. err, a lot, so I don't have the time to dedicate to finishing the "final" version of the site right now.

So I've just stuck up a redesigned simpler site + blog temporarily!! :D
