Windows 7 Aero and Nvidia Geforce 6600 problem

Posted 29 October 2009 - 03:19 AM

I have upgraded to Windows 7 on my older computer but if I try to upgrade to the latest Geforce 6600 driver then it just boots into a blank screen. Rolling back to the driver I got with the computer works fine but will not use Aero.

I know that the card is capable of using Aero as I have managed to update the driver and then go into low resolution mode, which boots up and I can see the Aero glass and transparency effects, but if I try to up the resolution it just blanks and gives me an out of range message.

I have searched and searched for a solution for this, any suggestions?

It might not be the card, it might be the OS itself. Have you tried the second to most recent driver for your card?

I had a wireless G card on a Vista that was being a colossal bitch earlier. turns out it was the drivers, they didn't like Vista.

The most recent driver (8 series) that said it was Vista compatible didn't work. The 7 series (2nd to most recent) is currently working like a charm.

I'm sure its not the card, because it was working perfectly in XP.

I have tried quite a few drivers and none of them work as I read that people had been using earlier drivers, one driver managed to get aero running but only in low res 640x480 any change in resolution would just cause the screen to blank.

An annoying thing is that the NVidia forums are down due to maintenance or there might be a fix by now.

I've got a partial fix going at the minute, if I set up as if I have dual monitors with the desktop only displaying on one then I can get a decent resolution with aero effects, unfortunately it isn't that great resolution so not a permanent fix by any means.

That might shed some light on the issue though, it recognizes the graphics card and says it has no display plugged in, maybe it would work through DVI :s

I think I have a fix now, get the latest drivers, restart in low resolution and then set up a second monitor on the graphics card (weird I know but it works) then only show the desktop on one monitor. Now restart and it should allow you to up the resolution and recognize your monitor, it may have an extended desktop option, just change it.

SOLVED for me, until they fix the drivers.
