Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

Posted 08 November 2009 - 10:21 AM

I have used openSUSE for a fair while now, however ran into some issues ( wireless drivers after updates + corrupt data ) over the weekend and figured seem as though i am formatting i might just download a few distro's and try my hand at some other popular ones.

Well i installed Mandriva and did find that quite neat and nice
I installed Fedora ( which i used years ago ) to find it was basically the same
I then installed openSUSE again and went nope time for ubuntu.

So i downloaded the Ubuntu x86_64 and i386 DVD iso's and installed both. I had a few minor issues with x86_64 so immediately reverted to the i386 and have to say it is possibly the nicest and most functional install i have ever used.

Everything is working out of the box with gnome desktop. Its neat, polished and extremely user friendly. Gone are the days of messing around installing a billion things one by one just to get the simplest things working such as .mp3 and flash in browsers. apt-get is flawless and so is synaptic.

Simply put i would recommend anyone thinking about migrating to linux for any reason to strongly consider ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala as it is quite simply brilliant.

Missing options. You assume that people either love it, hate it, or have not tried it, this is not a valid selection, which is why I have not answered your poll.

I'm an experienced Linux guy, nigh on 10 years with the Penguin. I haven't used Ubuntu 9.10 in anger yet, I never do a dist-upgrade within the first few months of a release. There are always issues and problems that need sorting out before I'm willing to upgrade my PC to the latest. Doesn't matter what OS, there are always teething problems.

Here's what I do know, Ubuntu is strong, and this release adds features to it that are quite nice. Personally, I'm waiting for mythbuntu to hit final release (Mythtv 0.22 is a major overhaul), so I can get my myth system updated. It has it's problems as well.

So, here's what I think of Karmic Koala. It's a strong Distro from the fine folks at Canonical, but don't forget all the work put in by all the developers whose software is included in this Distribution. There is a lot of work done by a lot of people who have no connection to Canonical, other than they write software for Linux. I don't love it. I don't hate it.

i like it. i love fedora more because dev tools come with the distro (at least, the one i downloaded). in ubuntu u have to do the apt-get stuff, sometimes they forget not everyone has a constant internet access.

i use the netbook edition as a dual boot with windows 7. it works perfectly and has a great user interface, a transparent desktop windows thingy!

I give it an A+ but i agree with olibenu, because you always have to be adding packages and stuff. but its not hard to do

You don't always have to add packages, only update if you are having some issues. If it works leave it as is :)
