Linux distribution for home server

Posted 10 November 2009 - 12:57 PM

Hello I'm running my home server for development and self education purposes.
As for now it runs Arch Linux, but since my desktop runs Arch as well I want to replace the server distribution to learn something new and to use something that is more or less standard in the industry.
The purposes of the server:
Apache web server with php, phyton, ruby
MySQL server
SVN repository
FTP Server
Probably a mail server.

I also might convert it to a VPS in future (if needed) to run 2-3 virtual servers.

From what I know the standard is more or less RedHat (that costs money), Ubuntu, Debian and CentOS.

Would like to hear your recommendations!

Thanks a lot!

I've never setup a server, but I'm thinking most linux distro's could easily be turned into a server. My vote goes to Debian

If you wanna learn some more stuff, and have a little fun, mebe try a BSD distro :D

Hope i helped :)

My vote is for Ubuntu because it's very highly supported and Debian because of it's maturity as an OS.

Ubuntu or Debian would both work fine. Ubuntu is highly supported so you might as well just go with that.
