Ubuntu

Posted 29 December 2005 - 09:42 PM

Okay, Ubuntu installed perfectly... Here is the problem.

My mouse wont work on windows anymore ( Which makes no sense ).

And internet doesn't work. For that last problem I am under the impression I need ethrenet lines instead of wireless.. I guess there isn't a driver for my card.

Any help is appreciated!

Ok, 2 seperate problems I'm guessing.

Your mouse (pointer) doesn't work in Windows, but only after you installed Ubuntu?

Your internet worked before installing Ubuntu, but now it doesn't work in Windows? Or does it work in Windows and not Linux?

Also, what kind of mouse is it?

I've got ubuntu on a couple of machines, including one with a dual boot win xp, and it picked up all mt peripherals and wireless internet connections perfectly.

Okay, Internet works on windows just not on Ubuntu.... Or I wouldn't be here right now ( Mom and Dad don't trust me on there computer ). Oh and maybe it doesn't have the driver for it, or Amadeus are you saying it got the drivers too.

Maybe I could get the WINE software and emulate the driver or something, I don't know what to do... ;-)

It is a micro mouse... It works on windows now, but not on linux.

Hmmm....that's peculiar...it really should just pick up the internet connection automatically, but you can set it manually as well. Did you have your modem on when installing? What kind of connection do you have? Also, which version of Ubuntu were you installing?

some wireless cards do not have linux drivers, so you may need to use something like NdisWrapper, which allows linux to use the windows driver for your card.

It's not stupid at all...there are a variety of ways to do it. Ubuntu actually has a tool caled the Synaptic package manager that allows you to choose many applications...it will install them for you from the most recent sources. As Ubuntu is debian based, you can also use the apt-get command (read the man pages for instructions) to get many applications.

Finally, you can find the applications themselves, and download them. Most pages will contain download instructions, but there are a few main varieties...some will contain a start file that you will run, and it will perform the installation. Others, you will have to compile yourself to the desired directory.

Certainly...except I'm currently behind a firewall that blocks messenger clients. I'll add you when I'm not.

And no worries about not making the switch right now...linux is a great operating system, but it does take some time to get used to. The best way to get to love it is to play with it over time...nothing says you gotta switch right now! :)
