I'm taking a year out before uni to save some money as I'm paying it all by myself and with the support of the governments lovely loans. I'll be taking the course AI and Cybernetics at Reading here in England come September.
I applied with no knowledge and little interest in the topic, I guess that all sounds worse then it was - I didn't really see the point in uni but was pushed to apply by friends, so flipped through the booklets and this was the only course I thought would challenge me in any way. My then partner was in her second year of AI and seemed to be enjoying it, the course stated you started from scratch in the first year, I thought what the hell, and somehow got in.
Now I'm 8 months away from the start of the course I figure I should try and see what I can pick up myself, and if I'm going to enjoy this all as much as I hope.
I've got the book Accelerated C++ as it was recommended by my future tutor, and I'm now completly stuck working out where to find a complier (or what they're really used for - other then putting in code and seeing the result, heh.)
I realise I must sound like a silly girlie nounce, but we all have to start somewhere, so can anyone recommend an easy to use, (and download as the computer I'm borrowing is awfully slow,) complier and also any online recomended reading?
This seems like a nice community, so I really hope I can give you some more interesting questions as the years go by!
Thank you my dears!

Hi whitmarsh, welcome to dream.in.code!
It's great to hear you are taking on the challenge of learning a little C++ and going to uni, we'll be happy to help you
A lot of the folks around here use Bloodshed Dev C++. You can also download one of the Visual Studio Express compilers, details here: http://forums.dreami...showtopic=13179
Good luck and feel free to ask any other C++ questions in our C++ forum: http://forums.dreami...showforum15.htm

Hello whitmarsh!
Welcome to </D.I.C>, and glad to have you. I hope you find this community helpful.
I would suggest Dev-C++ for a compiler, all it does, is compiles the code into an .exe file so your computer can understand it.
http://www.bloodshed.net/devcpp.html
As for online reading, I suggest http://www.cprogramming.com , they have many great tutorials there.
I am not sure if it was a smart thing you did, to take a class without really knowing what you are signing up for.
I wish you luck.

Hullo whitmarsh! Congrats on taking the plunge and going to the Uni, not only that but picking a field that you know relatively little about! That is a big step and I wish you all the success with it, who knows you may just turn out to be a natural
It's good to see you showing initiative and starting with some pre-learning that will totally help later on. </DIC> is a great place for learning and if you ever need help you can bet someone here has the right tools to guide you...anyway, enough rambling, welcome to the forums and hope to see you around

Thank you MarkoDaGeek and everyone else for the welcome and help! This whole journey has been rather daunting, but the moment I found this forum I knew it would be an excellent place to start to grow.
I realise jumping head on into something so unknown to me was rather rash, but I've never been the type to pussy foot around choices.
skyhawk133 and Mrafcho001 I'm downloading the programme during my work hours, and I am so looking forward to spending a few weeks learnign what I can and hopefully coming back to harrass you all with questions.
And bug thank you for giving me the positive push I need
