Networking Question

Post icon  Posted 26 November 2009 - 02:32 PM

Hey everyone,

I am working on setting up a 1Tb HD for an auto backup of my network. My question is this, do I need to partition the HD to handle multiple computers? Or am I free to set up the backup without partitioning the network? My only question is would files with similar names from different computers within the network be subject to overwrite on a non-partitioned HD?

Thanks for any help!

What software are you using for your backups?

You could just setup separate folders. I wouldn't mess with partitions. Partitions are like walls, pretty tough to move/resize.

If you just setup a folder for each computer, you should have on problem keeping things separate.

When the hard drive is formatted with a single or multiple partitions you will be able to do what you want.

You may want to think of keeping things organized by logical disk (partition), multiple partitions for dual backup if space is sufficient (not sure if someone would want to do this on the same drive).

I would format a single partition and just have a unique folder for each machine I am backing up.

If a file with the same name is placed in the same location, ie E:/BACKUP/, it should ask if you want to replace or discard.
