Should I Get a Hub or a Switch?

Posted 27 November 2009 - 07:07 PM

Here's the situation. I've got all my networking equipment on 1 side of my office. Vonage, Router, Modem, and a server. Then on the other side of my office I have my desktop, DirecTV receiver, and my TV... all networked.

The problem is my dog chewed through 2 of my 50' network cables and I don't want to hassle with having 3 separate 50 foot cables.

Should I just put a hub/switch at the end of the working 50' and then run a few 6' cables? Or is that going to mess up the DHCP on the router, etc. ??

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Prefer a switch to a hub. They'll both do what you want; basically act as a packet repeater and line splitter.

The difference is that a hub will repeat everything to everyone. A switch has more brains and will keep the conversations on it's ports separate from the others. A switch should be faster than a hub, regardless of the throughput rating.

Plus, depending on what brand switch you get, the higher end ones will offer the ability to manage your ports so that you can specify ones (like the one with vonage) to have higher throughput than the others. Maybe vonage is taking too much bandwidth, then lower it it's usage ability. Cap the bandwidth, or whatever the term is.

*Edit: Did not realize this is an old topic.

Also I would recommend Cisco SRW2008P Small Business Managed Switch, really easy to work with, may be a bit costly however it is worth the money, it also has mini-gigabit network expander, which may be useful if you need more ports such as say you buy more equipment.
