Linksys WUSB54G on Mandrake 10.1

Posted 27 January 2006 - 10:41 PM

Like the title says, I have the Linksys WUSB54G and Mandrake 10.1 and no idea how to make 2+2=4... so how do I set it up or obtain the proper drivers to do so? (If you can't tell, I'm a total Linux n00b ><;)

Thanks,
K-kun

I don't think that hardware has a driver for Linux. I can't give you details because I haven't done it before, but a free program called ndiswrapper will let you use the Windows drivers that are supplied with the adapter. That should give you a place to start poking around, and hopefully someone with more experience in this area will chime in to fill in the blanks. :)

While I've never used that card, I've gotten the WPC54G working under 3 or 4 different distros, including mandrake.

You can Find Ndiswrapper at http://ndiswrapper.sf.net as long as you follow the directions and you card is listed here: http://ndiswrapper.s.../index.php/List you should be good to go. You do need to be fairly comfortable working with the command line and editing files, but the installation guide holds your hand the entire time, so it's not that bad.

I'm going to sound like a complete idiot, but I have not a clue what to do... I un-tar'ed ndiswrapper, and I tired my best to follow the rest of the instructions, but I apparently screwed it up, beacuse it won't work. Would someone be kind enough to walk me through this? ><; Thanks

Do you happen to remember how you did it? If you could post instructions, it would be a huge help~

I hope that helps.

I don't have a clue what I'm talking about, but is this outdated? Or can I use 0.6 and install everything correctly? Thanks again

oh, yeah it wasnt outdated back when I used it, but it might be now... I'm sure you could use a newer build and roughly follow these instructions, they shouldn't have changed too much..

Okay, these are the exact problems I get when trying to install ndiswrapper:

when I run this command:

tar xvfz ndiswrapper-1.8.tar.gz

I get the error "No such file or directory". The file is on my desktop. If I use Ark to extract it, I get this error: "You do not have permission to write to this folder". I am running KDE. I tried to give my user (Karasu) permission to "/" but it isn't editable. And I don't have a clue how to change to the root user.

Thanks

To run a command as root (in a terminal) type "sudo command". To switch to root, just type "su". After each you will be prompted for root's password.

You can't write to the root directory, because as a normal user you have no reason to edit files outside of a few folders, like tmp and your home folder.

you also shouldn't need to edit files in the root directory anyway for this.

You might be getting the error when running tar because the file is on your desktop. In linux, (well, kde & gnome) the desktop is a sub folder of your home folder, something like "/home/karasu/.desktop". A terminal can only access and modify files from 1 directory at a time, and by default when you click the terminal button it starts in your home directory.

You can always try typing "ls" to list the curremt directory's contents, and make sure the file you're trying to untar is where you are.

Okay, I extracted to my desktop, and then it started to work fine. But after I type:
ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.6.8.1-12mdk /lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk/build

I get the error "Can't find kernel sources".

I can't find the source files that the install instructions says are needed... where can I get/find them, and then what?

Okay I -finally- figured out how to install ndiswrapper (installed it) and I -think- I installed the driver. In the Mandrake Control center, it's reading wlan0, but it won't let me apply it as my connection... anyone know what to do?

Thanks
