Random Restarting

Posted 28 January 2006 - 07:24 AM

Sometimes, it seems that my computer has a mind of it's own..

Just at random times it just restarts. Windows said it's a driver problem, but I haven't installed a driver in like a month.

This problem just started though. Any help is a appreciated :)

Intel Pentium 4 HT

( Gets out Manual ) VIA P4M800 North Bridge AND VT8257 Southbridge.

No I haven't installed any devices lately, I turned on Automatic Updates, maybe that will fix it :P

Have you done the requisite malware scans to make sure that it's not a virus or something like that? One thing you need to make sure to do is turn off automatic rebooting if you get a fatal error. It's under Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->System->Advanced->Settings(Startup and Recovery). Then under System Failure, make sure Automatically restart is unchecked. It's possible that what seems like random restarting is actually a fatal error causing the system to automatically restart, and not automatically restarting will give you a chance to see what the error message is before it goes away. :)

Good suggestions so far, I would add that random restarts can be caused by overheating - and it might cause similar error messages like yours. So blow out the dust from the case, and from the fins of your coolers ( CPU and VGA) , and maybe from the memory, too.

Drivers can get damaged, Try reinstalling or installing the latest version of drivers to major components that are known to cause problems like this like your video card. Is this problem truely random ? or does it normally happen like while playing a game or while a certain component is being used ?

LOL, kind of a 'nuke it from orbit' solution, but good for you if it worked.

Well, as many a Windows technician has said: "If something doesn't work, reboot. If that doesn't work, reinstall." :D
