Adobe illustrator joining non end points path?

Posted 10 December 2009 - 07:30 PM

I know how to merge 2 end points but i'm having trouble merging 1 end point with a non end point.

Like an end point of a line merging to a circle.

As you can see right now, i'm just positioning them to "stick together" their lines are not actually joining. As you know right now, connecting selected end points option will definitely not work. I want it to be as if i'm grouping them together.
Using path finder will not work also tried every option and the closest i get is when they are "merged" but that removes the big circle line where the line is.

In short i want the circle and the line to be 1 single shape (without grouping) when i change the color of the circle i'm also changing the color of the fill connecting the circle.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

As far as I know you can only move the end points so close together. Because these are essentially vectors and are created using a pen tool then there is no way of creating an intersection. You will most likely have to group them together. Sorry : (

I believe a solution would be to take the shapes you have there place them like you have in the second picture. Then take the knife tool and make a cut where both ends of the arc intersect with the circle. Then you will have to use the direct select tool, select the segment between the knife cuts and delete that segment. This will leave with endpoints from the circle and arc to now join. Hope that was clear.

I also found another sollution would be to use the add pen point tool and place the two objects where you want them to join. Add a point on the circle path in the two places that the shapes intersect. Then with the direct select tool, select the unwanted piece of path and delete. This will result in two open ended shapes that you can now join. BTW, Thanx.
