I get the error

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

where the hitcount should appear. I looked it up and it said it either means I entered the command incorrectly or the server doesnt recognize the command.

Is it a possibility that my server doesnt have CounterFilter

Edit: I changed it to

<!--#echo var="hitcount" -->

and now its showing up as

Edit2: Turns out my v. of apache doesnt support the command :-(
