Is it possible to "trick" an ad hoc network into being a str

Posted 22 December 2009 - 06:23 PM

At the moment i have a regular 100mb wired only router/modem. But i recently got a new laptop, so i was wanting to do a wireless network on the cheap, so i got a WiFi N USB dongle. And my laptop has an inbuilt Wireless N adapter (Intel Wireless 5100).

The problem is, one of the devices (or both) can only do 802.11b/g ad hoc networking.... And i would like to fully utilise my network speeds and coverage....

So my question is, is there any way to "trick" the network into being a regular structural one? I’m very aware that it is most likely that i WONT be able to do this.... But if anyone has any ideas/tips, i am quite willing to hear them out :)

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Well, using Linux and iptables, you could turn the laptop into a router.

If anything needs to turn into a router it would be the PC (it has the internet, and is connected to the rest of the network)

I could use my virtual linux (i use Win7) to do it.... possibly.....

Simplest method would be a wireless router, of course.

Barring that, if you got a wireless "access point" and plugged it into your wired only router, that might do the trick.

If you have an existing node on your network that also has a wireless card, you should be able to set that up as a server. This is the most complex solution; you're essentially making your own router. The "ad hoc" nature means the machine will want to support DHCP and will also need to support at least one static route; so a routing table. There's more, you'll want to google something like "linux gateway router". If your OS is windows then you may be out of luck, unless it's a server OS. Even then, it's a challenge. Of course, that machine will have to always be on...

Honestly, wireless gateway router; you can find them for under $50 and it would probably save you that much in electricity to not use a home grown solution.

I've actually found the little Windows Routing I've done to be pretty simple and easy, but then again, the network didn't have a wireless anything on it.

baavgai is right, you're probably better off spending $50 and getting yourself a wireless router/AP. It'll save you much more on electricity and you won't have to worry as much about the desktop staying up 24/7.

Yes Get a router with WiFi Capability, cheaper, easier, and will save you headaches later on.
