Ubuntu terminal and password problem

Posted 03 January 2010 - 06:07 PM

Okay I am new to Ubuntu I wanted to try a new OS so I dual-booted it on my laptop. Okay so I read the Documentation and learn how to program in Java. Then it tells me to lauch Terminal and to type in a code to install java 1.6 jdk. I type in the code hit enter it asks me for my password. I try and type it in but the only key I can click that does anything enter in which case because I never wrote anything it says 'Sorry try again'. I tried a lot of things I even tried writing my password in Gedit and copying it and pasting it in Terminal. Please help. And also my keyboard works fine in other applications and even in Terminal I just can't use my keyboard to type in my password in Terminal.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

But you can type other stuff in the terminal? If yes, then rest assured your keyboard works, you just won't get any asterisks or any characters at all to confirm it is actively getting your input. It's a security feature.

It's just the way the terminal was designed. Rest assured, if you type your password in the terminal, even though nothing will show up, then press enter, it will work fine.

When you open a terminal it should not prompt you for any credentials, as it should be launching as the user that you logged into the OS as.

Can you provide a screen shot of how you are launching this terminal?

Also "sorry, try again" is not how the terminal will reject a password. It gives you three tries & upon failure it says specifically that the password supplied for that user id is not correct. Should ... anyway.

sudo says "Sorry, try again." if you enter the wrong password. That's probably what he's talking about.

Ah. Didn't think about Sudo. Should have because of "Ubuntu". Thanks!
