Yah, I guess SixOfEleven makes a HUGE point there, and I hadn't really thought about that. Maybe just a "ask the expert" sort of thing where the the expert (or author/contributor/whoever) posts a topic describing a certain aspect of computer science in general and also for specific languages. That system might help fit the bill better.

sixofeleven that's really true, but being a noob i often find myself not knowing what to learn next, and i also often find myself not knowing what to program next, or i find myself not knowing exactly how to ask my question.
All im saying is that some questions don't really deserve to make it onto the forums, and that's where a mentor would fit perfectly in, if anything it would clean the forums up a bit and prevent necroposting.
Mentors would also be a great way to show noobs exactly how to post on the forums, my mentor on GD.net was the one who showed me how to navigate through their forums quickly

I've already adopted like 6. Keep up. They never really came back after they did what they wanted it seems.

There are many contributors and authors as well as DIC members who could fit the bill. It does go a little against the philosiphy of Dream.In.Code being a place for the sharing of knowledge, people posting their questions and having their questions answer so others can learn from the questions. I'm sure there are many people who do a search of DIC, find what they are looking for in the search and never actually ask a question.
Great point indeed, but I think what the OP was getting at was with the adopt-a-n00b philosophy was more of an apprenticeship than a matter of posting a question on a board, getting razzed about DIC not doing your homework for you, use code tags etc...
Perfect example I just picked up ASM 6502 for a hobby. Talk about n00b, I have a lot to learn and a lot of questions to ask. I am not going to come to the forums and post every question.
Same with some other languages - Java, Python and C++ for example. I am primarily a web developer. I already graduated college and took C++ and Java classes. I still have a lot to learn and when I get questions it would be nice to have guidance.
I picked up some things here and there, and asked questions when I had a problem I encountered and received answers- I was satisfied, thanked accordingly and went on with life. Now say I have a question about why this happens or how can I go about starting this problem more than likely that person gets slapped with the old :rules: tag.
I think it brings a special value to the site and encourages learning indepently. I also like my suggestion in the DIC Advisors forum (Also an idea from GameDev) where a workshop was hosted.

Well, the point that i am trying to get at here is that there are a lot of questions on this board that go unanswered, or answered and not fully explained. What a mentor can do is answer a Noobs question while fully explaining the topic in depth.

The only problem I could see with this is some people abusing the privilege. For instance, many of the people who create an account, and then only post once with "code plz" would be able to sign up for a mentor, who they would expect to do their work for them.
Maybe if a prerequisite of 50 or so posts was enforced, it would weed out most of that?
Sounds like a great idea anyway.
