Droid

Posted 13 January 2010 - 09:32 AM

I guess I am kind of curious to hear what you guys have to say about this phone. (For those of you who have it)

I recently just updated my BB Curve to the Storm 2. I've been reading a lot of reviews on the Droid and it seems just alright. My buddy got one yesterday and all I've heard the past 24 hours is how sweet it is.

I really like my Storm 2 but this Droid has caught my eye and really spiked my curiosity. I would greatly appreciate any feedback anyone has on it!

Take a look at the nexus one.
My friend has a droid, it is a sweet phone, but it's so bulky. It's an akward phone. But that's what you get for wanting touch + keyboard.

If you can live without the physical keyboard, take a look at some used myTouch phones or read up on the Nexus One.

Personally, I like the feel -- it's fairly thick, but heavy, and it feels really solid. It feels like you could drop it a few times from head height without damaging it. For me, that's a really nice trait, because I tend to drop my phones. :D

I had the iPhone right before I got the Droid, and I think they both have their strong and weak points. The Droid is a lot more customizable, but it doesn't have nearly as many apps, and most of them aren't as high-quality as the iPhone's. Within the next year or so, though, it should catch up to the iPhone, if something else doesn't replace both of them.

I don't have one, but a friend does so I have played with it a bit. It is a pretty nice phone, like cmh0114 said, it has its trade offs in comparison to the iPhone.

The biggest thing that gets me with it is only allowing for a single touch, the iPhone's multi-touch technology makes things a lot smoother and more intuitive. Because it doesn't have multi-touch there are annoying additional icons on the screen at pretty much all times for things like zoom.

Don't get me wrong, the phone works pretty nicely and seems to have some things going for it, I just prefer the iPhone.

I would take a droid over any other smart phone to date. My G1 has been the best investment I have ever made. I am not too keen on the Nexus being 100% touch - I like the keyboard so I might actually hold off on my upgrade. People I work with (3) of them have converted from BB to Droid.

What can I say about it...

Turn by turn GPS navigation
Google synching
100's of extremely powerful "FREE" apps and paid apps.
Ability to develop apps
It is *nix based so it works

Yeah I'm about to upgrade from my env3, a couple of my friends got their hands on the Droid, and it's a fun lil' phone, and like Nykc said, it's *nix based.

I have one and love it.

The GPS Nav is, well, awesome. Family has other dedicated GPS units and have complained about them often. Friends also have had other GPS units with mixed reactions. What I love about the Driod GPS Nav is that we get in the truck and SPEAK where we want to go and 99% of the time it picks up what we are saying and with a push of an on screen button, queries GPS and we're on our way. Multiple locations for lets say Best Buy, list all the locations near your position and allows you to choose which one you want. GPS updates fairly fast and re-routes quickly. Downside is it doesnt always give the best route but will always get you where you need to go.

Over 10,000 apps both paid and free. I have sat there with the phone browsing Market for over an hour and still amazed at how many apps that are out there.

I can say 'Dream in Code' and the internet will come up with DIC as the first link in mobile google.

Media station is cool as well. When docking it goes into desk mode, clock which takes up the majority of the screen; icons for music and a couple of other things; weather for your location is automatically updated.

Preinstalled 16GB MicroSD card is nice as well.

If I'm texting someone and need to email them or just call them... just click on their avartar which brings up a sub menu of icons... click on the email and your there.

Like I said I love the thing. I dont really find it heavy or overly bulky. Development will continue and will eventually reach that of iPhone apps in both quality and quantity.

I have a T-Mobile myTouch 3g.. Not a Moto Droid, but still an Android phone. Personally; I love it. I've played with iPhones, BlackBerrys and WinMo phones... I like Android and what it has to offer better than any other phone system. Sure, it may still have some downsides when compared with something like the iPhone, but Google is busting their butts to improve it. So I fully expect Android to "catch up" in the feature/usability departments in 2010.

That's it, contest over. Everyone get Droid's now.

I'm getting a Droid or Nexus as part of my GDC pass. I'd actually rather have the Droid because I like having a keyboard that doesn't block the screen.

Both the Droid and Nexus support multi-touch as part of the hardware and OS, but have it locked out at the moment thanks to Apple being a greedy cock blocking company. What I'm hoping this means, is that the retarded notion of copyrighting 'multi touch' can get challenged, and when it does a simple OS update will allow the existing phones to start using it.

The Nexus One just had an OTA update that enabled multitouch in the user-facing software... So now you can pinch to zoom. Also, it was just announced that the Motorola Droid would be getting an update to 2.1 very soon (within a week). Most likely, the 2.1 update will enable multi-touch in user-facing apps as well.

That's awesome. :D That's one of the things that I really don't like about the Droid - it's painful to zoom in/out of webpages. That, and the home screen layout sucks. But, with the new update, hopefully at least one of those will be taken care of! :D

I tried one out over the weekend and it was alright. It had a lot of good features to it, but what really turned me away from it was the slide out keyboard. It was very hard to type on and in my opinion very poorly built. Why even bother to put one on the phone if it's going to be poor?!
