Image hard drive and return to current state

Posted 07 March 2006 - 08:17 PM

ok, i'm at about that 6 month to a year mark where its pretty obvious my computer could use a good format. but its always a pain in the ass that i dread to no end. SO MY QUESTION IS THIS. i have heard of software where i can make a backup of my hard drive at a current state (I.E. os fully installed with many of my constantly used programs already installed and everything running super sexily and super cleanly), pop the discs in, and bam, there i am again. i also like this idea because i want to screw around with linux over spring break and won't have the threat of needing to be able to accomplish anything from home. and it will be nice that when i do need to, and after ive finished trashing my hard drive with kernel compiles and the like, that i can just pop my backup in and go.

so, hit me back guys, i know there is something.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

It sounds like yo're talking about Norton Ghost.

I wouldn't suggest doing something that.

A format with a clean install of every program individually is better.

But isn't that what Ghost allows? So you can have it back at a state that was fully functional without having to reinstall everything.

A mirror is a mirror.

ghost creates a sector-by-sector copy of your hard drive, so when you restore a backup, it returns the drive to EXACTLY how it was before, as if nothing had changed since you made the backup.

beautiful. that comes with the latest norton as long as it's one of the full versions correct?

I actually have no clue, I only know about it because I use it at work. I do know that you can buy ghost alone from symantec, but it costs like $75 or something.

as well as it restores any broken registries, spy-ware/viruses, and whole bunch of useless files that are uselessly created by windows for no good reason, and what not.

Again a clean format, and re-install from original disks will squeeze the most amout of speed.

I do it once every 2-3 months. I've tried ghost myself, and its pretty easy to setup and use, but there is not difference.

As said above, it restores everything sector-by-sector.

If that is what you want to do, then ghost is the way.

it only does that IF you have that stuff installed. i am going to do a full clean format, followed by installing my most used software and anti-virus stuff, then making the backup. essentially all i am doing is skipping the constant process of reinstalling software.
