Java is a programming Language. It is created by James Gosling from Sun Microsystems (Sun) in 1991. The main thing about learning java is that it writes the program once. Then it runs this program on multiple operating systems.
For absolute beginner with no experience in programming and no knowledge on the OOP principles and concepts, I would recommend the
i. Java a Beginner’s Guide by Herbert Schildt
ii. Java: The Complete Reference (Ninth Edition)
After reading these books, now I have an acceptable knowledge of Java.

Also there are many other books to learn java, but I am referring you some top books
Following are the list -:
• Java: The Legend by Benjamin Evans
• Introduction to Programming Using Java, Sixth Edition by David J. Eck
• Object-Oriented vs. Functional Programming by Richard Warburton
• Java 8 in Action: Lambdas, Streams, and functional-style programming
• Java Cookbook: Solutions and Examples for Java Developers
• Core Java Volume I — Fundamentals (9th Edition)
• Effective Java 2nd Edition
• Java SE8 for the Really Impatient
• Beginning Programming with Java For Dummies
• Java Programming 24-Hour Trainer
• Java Performance: The Definitive Guide
• Java Programming
• TCP/IP Sockets in Java
• Learn Java in One Day and Learn It Well
