PCI - e

Posted 20 March 2006 - 11:52 PM

Err basically im still using only PCI stuff, as my board is 2 years old and doesnt have a PCI - e slot

so PCI - e is...

Quote

@ WikiPedia
PCI Express, or PCIe, (formerly known as 3GIO for 3rd Generation I/O, not to be mistaken for PCI-X or PXI) is an implementation of the PCI computer bus that uses existing PCI programming concepts, but bases it on a completely different and much faster serial physical-layer communications protocol. The physical-layer consists not of a bus, but of a network of serial interconnects (because synchronization of parallel connections is hindered by timing skew) much like twisted pair ethernet. A single hub with a lot of pins on the mainboard is used, allowing all kinds of switching and parallelism.

so the smaller slots are PCI-e ?

and what all cards(eg sound card , tv tuner etc etc) are available in PCI - e ? cause i dont know anything bout it.

just post anything about PCI - e to increase my Knowledge :)

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

PCI Express is mainly for video cards... I doubt they would make things like PCIe soundcards and such... PCIe is designed for speed... as far as video goes a PCIe x16 slot is twice as fast as AGP.

PCI x16 slots dont look much different then reg PCI slots.

so should i feel outdated with my 256 MB Geforce AGP card ..

or the market costs for PCI-e video cards are still on the higher side. (indicating that its just arrived)

na you are fine with your AGP.

You just arenot bleeding edge.

We have gotten a few PCI-e x1 slotted video cards to add extra monitors to some of our guys in claims but besides being really really small they are not really that grate for anything more then word documents.

AGP isnt a dead technology by any means, their still designing modern cards for AGP 8x and such... but if your building a new system and want to future proof, PCIe X16 is something you should look into getting...
