Ok, so Dell is trying to buy Alienware. They say that the high-end computers will compliment their cheap piece of crap computers. Dell claims that the company will stay the same, just be owned by different people, but I don't believe it. That's not the way big business works.
Personally, I hate Dell computers. I think they are some of the worst computers (right after Compaq, and HP of course). But that is just my personal opinion. I'm thinking about buying a few alienware computers before they sell out to Dell.
What do you think about this? Anyone here own or use an Alienware computer?

well once upon a time our hero (namely me)
was given 3 grand to buy a computer by his employer. So the little
noticed that the supposidly the great and powerful Alienware was releasing a laptop. (thus beginning my membership at DIC) However there was only one problem that our hero
ran into. Bleeding edge Hype and lots of it however no one had ever written a review on this beast so there was nothing to compare it to.
So there I was with my new Laptop all was well for the period of 2 weeks when the latch to the lid broke ( apparently there was a manufacturing defect that there was too much air in the plastic used to mould the hook latch. ) but I wasent going to send it back for that just yet. ( I still had 2 years of warrenty left to go. ) 6 months later the thing started to give off electic shocks not a static jolt but a constant shock (like stiking a 9 volt to your tounge)
I stuck a multi meter to the screws that were on teh bottom of the laptop and there was 18 volts running from the laptop to ground. (Apparently they forgot to ground the thing properly and it was shorting out) so off it goes for service. they said that they didnt replace anythig but there is now a metal mesh over the CPU intake fan and the power block is diffrent. ( at least they fixed the latch )
the only problem was that this little repair took almost 7 months worth of time.
I finally got my laptop back ( I knew it was mine as it had the same serial #) and it worked fine for 2 weeks then the thing wouldent turn on. No LCD no Led's nothing.
Sent it back and they lost it for a year this time. ( yeah it was really really bad had to get a lawyer to finally get my computer back) Their excuse was a parts shortage. as soon as I got my laptop back I turned around and ebayed it and built a nice little mini for $800 because I had a lemon their phone service was ok but their depot can lick my ass.
Your milage may vary but not from Alienwares support forum.
Roll your own PC or get a mass manufactured laptop from best buy with their extended warrenty where they will mostlikely give you a new one when it breaks ( and they will )

Wow. That's pretty crappy.
Although if the laptop release was the first model, it probably just came with a lot of bugs.. i dunno
I still hate buying mass produced laptops. I can build my own PC, but laptops are harder to get parts for and such. And cheap best buy laptops break down just as much or more, they just get "fixed" faster.
I say "fixed" because my laptop came back 3 different times with the original problems fixed, but new ones from them breaking something while fixing it. The final one was that my laptop came back with no screws in the chassis at all.

How are acers? I've never had one myself, but a friend of mine got a cheap one from her college. It kinda putzed out on her, but she beat it up a lot too.
I've been wanting a good AMD platform, and if I'm not mistaken, isn't that what acer uses?

I do agree with the Dell part, though - they're total crap. That's what my school has, as well as my office. They all blow.

if you really want an alienware type laptop order it from sager as it is the same thing just about 1/2 the price. Both of them use the same clevo laptop board and chassis
I just priced out a Area 51 m5700 and a sager 5710 they basically look the same except sager used ATI's x700 graphics chipset and Alienware used the 6800 to go.
the alienware was 1,769.00
The Sager was $1,379.00
that is almost like a $400 diffrence for the same laptop.
You have to add a bunch of crap to get the Alienware up to the base model sager that I used.
