Secondary IDE Channel error code 39

Posted 15 February 2010 - 06:32 PM

Any ways that you all can think of to fix this would be great.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 running XP Home Ed.

The Primary IDE Channel is working fine and there are no error alerts for the drivers.

System restore couldn't go back far enough, and I've already removed the filters in regedit.

I was told by a tech support chat site to try switching the small plastic cap on the back of my drive to slave (which just kept the secondary channel from showing up in device manager).

I'd rather fix the drive I have than shell out the $ for an external drive, which seems to be my only option left.

Again, any fixes are greatly appreciated

What when you tried this, what were the results?

When I switched the plastic cap the drive was still not working. The only thing that changed is the IDE channel no longer shows up in device manager and when I first turn on my comp, I have to hit F1 because it says it cant detect my secondary disk drive.

PS- I only replied via PM because I figured you would read that before this thread. I'm guessing it's best to post it here so others with the same problem can learn from my experience?

I don't doubt your knowledge of computers, or your experience. But just to be sure, when you say "I changed the plastic cap" you do understand what you changed & how you set it the way that you did yes? You understand the master/slave concept in IDE hard drives?

Also, what make & model are the hard drives, so that I can check the error code for myself.

The HD is a WDC WD800BB-75FJA1 (I hope that's what you were talking about) in a DELL Dimension 2400 Desktop and I forgot the technical name/model for the CD/DVD drive. It wasn't the one that came with the PC, and I remember it was Lite-On brand, it cost ~$70 at WalMart and it came with a CD that had InCD and Nero on it, but I don't know the model number.

As far as I know the plastic cap made it so the HD was recognized as the master drive and the cd drive was a slave drive. I just went with what the tech support guys at windrivers.com told me. When it comes to hardware, all I know is what hookups connect where on the back of the tower and which way is right-side-up for USB flash drives. (In other words me + hardware trouble = :stupid:

If you remove the cdrom completely, does the error still occur?

There's no disk in the drive. It won't read them anyway.

By CDRom I meant the entire device. Does the error occur if you take the Slave device off the IDE chain?

What do you mean? As in take out the entire drive?

Wouldn't that just remove access to it completely?
