Sony or Dell?

Posted 19 February 2010 - 01:05 PM

I'm looking at laptops for myself and its between Dell or Sony, I'm leaning more towards Dell, but my father keeps thinking I should go with Sony... Idk whats better, Sony is obviously one of the best electronics in the world but its also 200-400 dollars more than the dell.

Any personal opinions on this?

Thank you,
Musya

I am of the opinion that Sony laptops are overpriced.

The name on the shell is just the name brand. The chipset & hardware are what make the laptop. The best Dell will always beat the worst Sony & vise versa.

So I take it personal experience has had both of them being good, Personally I've never had dells brought to me for repair, nor sony's, at least not for hardware, I had one dell for virus issues but thats totally different. Sony does seem over priced but Competitive too... uhh the pain.

I've had both Dell & Sony laptops come in for DC Jack repair & LCD repair. neither are fault with the manufacturer.

My wife has a Toshiba Satellite and just loves it, it's really a great laptop and one you should consider.

My answer would be to find out what kind of hardware is in each, and do some research on that. Read reviews on problems with each machine and their related hardware and see which tend to use better quality parts in their build. Newegg and TigerDirect both include user reviews and ratings, which I find invaluable when building my own system, or in your case, buying someone else's.

I would much rather build but laptops are hard to get parts for. @PsychoCoder I've had 2 toshibas previously, both had power supply issues, other than that they're fine laptops I just think the problem will persist. Both are competitivly priced, sony though starts very basic and you gotta add on extras, like extra ram, backlit keyboard, etc etc, dell on the other hand is usually set up with the extras and you can either upgrade or downgrade just depending on the model or the special that they got going on.

I recently worked on a "competitively priced" Toshiba Laptop. It was, to date, the cheapest (as in horrible quality) laptop I've seen. The wires were held down by masking tape that had been dried up due to the heat. The motherboard had power issues, just as you've experienced. I lost all respect for Toshiba when I saw what a shoddy product they put out.

Well all I know if my wife has had hers for over a year without a single problem, and I mean no issues whatsoever. It's got a 3.0Ghz processor, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 graphics (she plays WoW and it plays the game better than her desktop) 4GB memory, 500GB HDD, built-in bluetooth, 17" widescreen display and she only paid about $700 for it. Given the experience she's had with hers when I get another laptop that's what I'll be getting.

I had a Dell Netbook (pretty much loaded) and I wasn't real impressed with the Dell product (My son's Acer Netbook performed better than my Dell so I ended up selling it, well that and the small keyboard hurt my wrists (carpal tunnel)) and wouldn't buy another Dell for any amount of money.

So if you're choosing between a Dell and a Sony I would say Sony hands down.
