random restarts

Posted 17 April 2006 - 04:18 PM

I'm getting random restarts on my computer. i thought it was windows when i did a fresh install but i'm still getting it (although not as frequently, still enough to be annoying), weird enough however if i boot into knoppix i can stay up for 48 hours no problem. is this an os problem? a hardware problem? do you have any recommendations for any software that will allow me to test for bad ram, bad hard disks, bad anything that may be giving me these restarts?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

my best bet: bad memory

edit, that's also the easiest to test for (assuming, like me, you have inferior sticks sitting around)

It won't just randomly reboot. It's been told to do so.

Right-Click on My Computer.
Click the Advanced Tab
Then click Startup And Recovery

Under System Failure, uncheck Automatically Restart.

When it gives a BSOD (because now it should, instead of restarting), write down the EXACT message, and all the numbers. Because if it's always the same #'s showing up, it's definately a hardware issue.

Cheers!

thanks man, appreciate it! i'll give you guys a status update when i get the numbers. however it mostly seems to do it when it idles (i.e. i leave the computer for 30 minutes while its downloading and come back to find it has restarted, or i turn it on and start music since it is also my stereo and it restarts while im doing something else)

If it is hardware, and you want to probe at the problem... Try a benchmark program like SiSoft Sandra...

I did that with my old computer a while back to find out which component was defective. Turns out everytime I ran a benchmark on the memory, I would get the problem.

New stick of ram and problem was cured.

so i turned my screensaver off (electricsheep.org) and the machine lasted for over 24 hours before resetting again. no blue screen and i was sitting right in front of it. case was not hot at all and i ran the power supply on low for the entire period with no problems.

i need to get ahold of some benchmarking software or something i guess.
