Does anyone else think that it might be a good idea to remove the ability to rep up or down in the heated topics section?
I would be concerned that the rep of helping people with programming and being helpful in those arenas might get muddled by voicing controversial opinions or in particularly heated debate, people down-repping.
What do you think?

I was so tempted to hit the rep down button, you have no idea.
Yes, I think taking the entire Lounge out of the reputation system is being floated about. The fun of systems going live is having the users bang on it. There are always unforeseen consequences of new features.

While individual posts may not be rep'ed down folks can easily go through all your past posts and rep them down in a fit of twat-ish-ness... Heated topics and the lounge almost would have to get a separate system.. a boo/hiss - applause system..

I agree. I think that if you can rep down/up in heated topics then there will be a whole LOT of rep downing going on.
On the other hand, a way to mark a post as intelligent or unnecessary wouldn't be bad.

Wow....I never thought of that. Maybe there should be logic in place to prevent a user from down repping the same user more than X number of times per Y amount of time. Of course, you could still abuse it, but you're need to really want it.

Very good points. While I'm sure that many will disagree with the AMOUNTS of votes, they should agree with the concept.
It seems my reputation has suffered because of the heated topics.

If you don't like the heat, stay out of the kitchen. I've noticed the people who've up-voted the opening post, and then the reasons why they might have been down-voted in the heated topics forum. I'm not against removing votes in the heated topics forum though- go ahead and knock it out if you want to.
I think it would be better if there were votes, but they don't effect the user's total votes. That way you can see people's reactions, but they don't mean anything other than what is actually important- response to individual posts.
