Pay Rate for online technical teacher?

Posted 24 February 2010 - 02:51 PM

I wasn't quite sure where to post this, but I was curious if any of you have ever or hired someone to do technical trainings online (or worked as one yourself). If so, what do you think would be a reasonable rate to hire a teacher for the following course.

Topic REST and JAX-RS
one 1.5-hour course per week
one 1-hour Q&A session two days after class.
Need to create slides as none exist
Create 10 multiple-choice exercise questions per week
Create a homework/lab for each week.
course length 15-weeks
MS LiveMeeting access is provided

Thanks!

At the college where I work (I'm in Continuing Education), we get paid between $30 and $40 /hour (Canadian) to teach courses (onsite, online, mixed format). We also do corporate training and that is a fixed rate of $35 / hour. In regards to our developments, that is also a fixed rate of $25 / hour.

For myself (when I do freelance training outside of my work with the college), I charge at least $30 / hour. I am a certified teacher in Ontario which helps. I personally would expect some time to prep the materials as well. Since you are requesting 2.5 hours of active teaching, I would say bumping it up to 3 or 3.5 hours per week of billable hours would be a nice minimum.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. I think that the rates for this type of job must be a lot different between Canada and the U.S. I do appreciate your response though.

Anyone in the U.S. have any thoughts?
