Photoshop is great because it's all you need.

With some skills (which I lack too) a professional (certainly not me) could create some great images.

Paint Shop pro however, might be easier to use. It depends on the person.

Paint Shop Pro is a dying breed, Photoshop is definately the market leader. Also it's comparing two different types of applications, Paint Shop Pro is more for drawing and creating orginal artwork, Photoshop was orginally designed for editing, which is where the filters and such came in.

Paint Shop Pro is junk, I've used Photoshop 7 for years and don't plan to change. I've tried CS and CS2 and it just seems 7 is more streamline, solid and reliable... the new ones offer a lot of bloat. So if your going for Photoshop look into the various versions and the features they offer, you could save a lot of money getting an older version.

I personally enjoy photoshop. It is much more easier to use, and well the commands make more sense. I've tried Paint Shop Pro but it was just too annoying to figure out how to do things in it. I've tried every version since Photoshop 6.0 and I can say that I am satisfied with my CS2. Although there are minor changes from 7.0 those differences have made it easier for me to work with images and create my own set of graphics. Although PSP is faster because it requires less Ram and a less powerfull processor to run than Photoshop does, you won't be dissapointed. I was curious with Photoshop and I found it easier to use. Besides there are way more photoshop tutorials out there.

FROM A PREVIOUS PAINT SHOP PRO USER

Paint Shop Pro is not bad. I have used it since version 3. It edits graphics and makes products similar to photoshop. However, if you want to get into professional graphic designing, I would heavily suggest photoshop. Shadows and gradients are 110% easier in photoshop, hands down. I might say for actual photo editing, Paint Shop Pro would be a comparable / better choice in the fact that it is pretty easy and cheap. I make graphics, however, and I made the switch to photoshop last february and regretted not switching sooner.

If you have previous experience in Photoshop, I would suggest sticking with it.

If you want to spend %80 less, go with Paint Shop Pro, it's only $80 and commonly has rebates on that even. It is not a bad program, you just have to do things more manually. PSP also supports a lot (if not all) of PS's brushes, patterns and the likes.

Both companies have trial versions, I would suggest downloading both and googling a few tutorials for both on similar subjects (shading, gradients, making buttons, etc) and see which suits your fancy more.

On a side note, I also don't like that Jasc sold their soul to Corel. I hate Corel. :(

It would most likely depend on what you are using your graphics for. Personally I think Adobe is a push over and they brag too much. I've been using Paint Shop Pro *7* for 9 years and haven't upgraded.

Different ways to look at it:

Proffessional Graphics: PS
Personal Graphics: PS elements OR PSP. Elements just incase you just *have* to have an adobe product.

Useable Interface: PSP
Confusing ready to throw compie out window: PS

Program uses to many steps to do simple things: PS
Straight forward tools: PSP

Have 500 bucks to spare: PS
Poor Rich College Student: PSP

*shrug* xD either way have fun!

another vote for photoshop. The only bad thing is if you get hooked on it, using anything else just feels weird. haha

I can't even use the gimp now :P

not using photoshop is the dumbest thing you can do. adobe is the industry standard for a good reason.
