i have a gigabyte dual channel ddr400 amd64 motherboard, and i had mismatched 433 ram, so i ordered 3 more 512mb sticks from ebay to match 1 of them.
PNY VERTO ddr433 pc3200 thinking it would work well.
but the guy sent me ddr500 pc4000 PNY VERTO ram with leds and it's really nice, i was excited, but i forgot my board doesn't support it...
right now i have 2 of the new 512mb ram sticks inserted. my bios reports that i'm running ddr400...
if i insert the third matching 512mb stick of ram, my computer doesn't boot up!!! nothing shows on the screen, and most odd, there are no post error beep codes... WTF!
and when i insert my old 512mb ddr433 in the fourth slot, same thing... no go.
i can't find enough information online about this board or what it can support. and all it says on the box is... Gigabyte K8 Triton series, NVIDIA SLI Nforce4 ddr400

if you have 4 slots for ram which is what i have then you can only have 1 stick, 2 sticks or 4 sticks, but if your motherboard has only 3 slots for it then i do not know

oh, but i added the fourth (which was the oddball stick) and it reacted the same as the three... no bootup, no post error code....

I have the same mobo, and i have read that they have issues with using all of their RAM slots. I hate to say it, but the slots available are most often (number you have -1).
You may wish to swap a dim, and see that they work properly first, a bad stick of RAM can definatly keep your computer from booting.

i took out the cmos battery and put it back in resetting the cmos, and it booted with 4 ram sticks. 3 identical, and 1 was a slower speed (3xddr500, 1xddr400). but the board only supports ddr400... so if i got the fourth stick (for a total of 4xddr500) would i be able to run any faster? or would it still downclock to my mobo's supported speed?

Well...I'd suggest selling them and getting a full set of 4 new ones...That is if you want to.

you cannot mix RAM speeds! That is likely your biggest issue, the memory size does not matter, but it is rare if different speeds will work in the same mobo at one time.
I would also suggest selling the dims of speed you are not interested in and buying new ones (the same as the one(s) you keep) to replace them)
