looking to buy a new laptop

Posted 10 June 2006 - 04:37 AM

hi all.
I am currently interested in purchasing a new laptop in the medium to high end range ($2000 - $2500). I am only looking for pc based systems because all of the programs i own are pc based. i will be doing web/photo/animation work on it. what are some preferrable manufactures that have a good reputation and high end systems?
thanks.

I've been turning into a whore for Dell lately but their XPS notebooks have been getting some awesome reviews.

Acer is another brand worth looking into, their starting to release some high end notebooks.

I personally have had a bad experience with laptops, they seem to break within 2 years on me, so i suggest . NO LAPTOP. and actually all my freinds that have laptops have also broke in one way or another within 2 years

Well that's a generalized statement, Maybe your too hard on your notebook, there are manufactures that develop durable notebook solutions like Panasonic and their Toughbook .

Alot of people including me cant live without a notebook, I'm using it constantly for work and such.

Good lordm this thing is like the tank of all notebooks. Who the hell needs a notebook this tough? I wouldn't be surprised to see kevlar plates in the features. Looks kind of clumsy though.

My boss's sister has one, shes an insurance agent for Aflac and brings it everywhere.

The thing isnt bulky at all, in fact it's one of the most tiny notebooks I've ever seen.

heh, we bought a few toughbooks for field use, then one of my corporals bought one just for the hell of it, we chunk it round the office, and at people who aren't in our section.

But as for notebooks, Asus (betcha didn't think of them eh) makes great laptops. Low end ones are a little bland, but the higher end ones are top notch. I've got the z270va, and its still running great, just waiting to put gentoo on it :) I've never had a problem with their devices, and their notebooks are no exception. Also you might look at Sager.

Insurance adjusters, I am constatly getting laptops in from our field people that have been dropped from roof's or rained on or ... ... ... etc.

The STL PD uses them in their patrol cars, the military uses them in the field although the tempest version. ( tempest was declassified but that is all ill say about that )

I too am looking for a laptop and i've gotten pretty much the same responses from above.

I'm a dell whore as well so i'm considering a e1705 for a (low-medium) preformance and budget system. The XPS series looks great - definately worth checking. The m1710 and later are getting fantastic reviews while the older (m170 and <) are still being kicked around as preformance laptops.

Other then that ASUS and ACER make great notebooks too. Just depends on what kind of money you're looking to dump into a system. Personaly my budget is low (school grant) and is little more then about 1200.
