Laptop issues

Posted 24 April 2010 - 09:57 AM

Well my laptop hasn't been working for a long time now and I can't figure out why. When I start up my computer it loads up but right before I get to the log-in screen the computer flashes blue then restarts itself. I don't know why. Other times it will ask me to press like F1 or F2 to configure everything. It seems like it thinks it's a new computer (which it's not). And i just figured out that my battery is always 0% charged and it says it's status is idle. I don't know what is wrong with this laptop but I really want to fix it. So if anyone can help me please help! Thanks!

Ps: it says ac power adapter type cannot be determined

Well, if you are using Windows, the blue flash is basically a BSOD and it means that there is a critical system failure. If it is a logical problem, you will have to re-install Windows (if it was Windows) at least (highly recommended).

If it is not a logical problem, then it can be something with the hardware. Since it throws a BSOD, it can be RAM, CPU or the mainboard. Have you replaced anything in the laptop? Did you open it by yourself? Was it ever in a service center?

At what point does it say "ac power adapter type cannot be determined"?

well I got this laptop off of eBay. And I've taken the battery out a few times. And when it says that it is right when it loads up. Like directly after I press the power button. And under it it will say to press f3 to not show that screen again, f2 to configure the computer(time date etc) and the f1 to continue

BIOS battery is possibly bad &/or going bad.

Let me guess, you have a Dell & a 3rd party adapter.

I have a Dell. Idk what 3rd party adapter means though. And how would I make the bios not bad?

A 3rd party adapter is an AC Adapter, the brick, that is not manufactured by Dell.

& I didn't say the BIOS was bad, I said the BIOS battery. What holds a charge to keep power to CMOS when the laptop is powered off.

Dell laptops are picky about the power adapter. My suggestion would be to purchase an OEM Dell power adapter from eBay. Don't just buy the cheapest one, that's probably what the previous owner did. I've seen this time & time again.

can you look for the model number? maybe we can help you find the cmos battery.

The cmos battery is what saves the date and time and other settings on your laptop. It's usually is the size of a watch battery.

Hopefully its not buried to far into the laptop.
