Best book for learning silverlight?

Posted 11 May 2010 - 08:28 PM

1) As the title suggests, what is the best book for learning Silverlight?

2) Am I required to have mastered a particular programming language before learning Silverlight?

I learn new programming languages best by having a book that explains the purpose of the language and a general overview of some cool things it can do, the syntax and basics of the language, and then building small projects as we learn more advanced topics.

If there is anything like that, please let me know!
If there is a language I must learn at least to the intermediate level, please let me know!

I don't know what the best book is but if you want free ebooks on different programming languages you can find them here...

You should have atleast some understanding in either C# or VB.Net before starting Silverlight. But no, you don't have to have mastered any language.

I would suggest these 2 books:

Silverlight 4 In Action - Pete Brown
Foundation Expression Blend 4 with Silverlight - Victor Gaudioso

Both are for Silverlight. Silverlight 4 In Action is a great book that is very detailed about all aspects of Silverlight 4.

Foundation Expression Blend 4 with Silverlight is a great, hands-on book for working with Expression Blend.

If you are going to learn Silverlight, then you should get and use Expression Blend.

I have to agree with the two books that Eclipsed posted. I have read them both. As far as reference material I do like the Apress series's usually like: http://www.apress.com/9781430229797

But I do not think one has to be a pro in any language to work in Silverlight quite frankly I think Microsoft made producing quality applications in Silverlight very easy.
