Need Help With WinZip

Posted 12 May 2010 - 05:51 AM

The tech-team in my school district had the wonderful idea to install the WinZip trial on the computers here. Unfortunately, we can no longer open zipped files (data files for computer classes, etc.) here with the default "Compressed (zipped) Folder" program. WinZip has become the default setting and though I was able to locate the dll for compressed folders in system32, I was unable to get the folder to use that program for extraction. The trial is of course over now, and our tech-team will not register for the full version of WinZip. Please help!

There are ways to enable such functionality. It involves calling regsrv or editing registryl; you just need to Google for the details. However, that's the tech team's job!

Before you go down that path, I suggest you install 7-zip instead, which is both free, and has greater support for compressed files. It's a non answer when I say, "install another program!", but do take a look. There's basically two programs in use these days: WinRAR and 7-zip for handling compressed archives. I'm truly shocked that your tech-team installed WinZip when there's a free program of significantly better quality.

Try 7-zip first, and let us know afterwards if you really want to restore Windows basic support for compressed files.
