I have a slight problem with MS Excel and Powerpoint on my dads partners laptop. They keep starting at start up I have checked and they are not in the startup folder. Also checked msconfig I can't see them in there(unless they are not named excel or power point?). Any one else got any ideas??

While using msconfig, don't look at the Item name, look for the location of the entry(listed under Command). Check if any of them leads to the desirable executables.
Also, check all the "Non Wanted" entries.(Sometimes I use *.bat files for running multiple executables)

I have checked msconfig but still no joy. I can't imagine what could be making these start on startup. I have used Spybot to check what items are starting up but none of the items relate to Excel or Powerpoint.

I use HijackThis for removing any software from the system startup.
There are plenty of websites dedicated to the output from the program, so you should have no problems locating the process name(s) that you are looking for.

you can delete them form registry the path is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
in there are all your programs that run in startup.
good luck dude

Thanks for the information, this problem has now been fixed but thanks again for the advice I'll keep this in mind next time I come across this type of problem.
