Windows XP Help

Posted 06 July 2010 - 08:54 AM

I have two questions.

1)WHAT can i do to speed my computer up? I have 1 gig of ram (not sure what type) and i have a 20 gig partition for winXP that has about 5 1/2 gigs left. i have also been seeing a message that my virtual memory is low. is that kinda like a swap area?anyway, i will post more info about my computer when i can figure out how to find it.

2)I don't get the choice of booting into safe mode or whatever it is anymore after i installed linux onto the other 20 gig partition. i can still boot into normal mode, but that is my only choice.

any info you have on these things would be appreciated.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

You mean if you press F8 it only gives you normal mode? Or can you not get to the F8 windows boot menu at all?

Yes, virtual memory is swap, it's just in a hidden file rather than its own partition.

You can speed it up by adding ram, removing old clutter like programs which run at startup and so forth. Anything more (like a new CPU, for instance) is probably not economical.

i don't even get the chance to press F8. it boots the linux mint grub, and i have 5 choices. 2 mint choices, 2 hardware testing choices, and 1 winXP choice. i choose the one for XP, and it automatically goes to the loading screen with the windows logo, and the little scrolling bar at the bottom.

Try selecting the WinXP choice and immediately start pressing F8 to see if you get the SafeMode window. I had a similar problem once on a clients machine.

Change the timeout option on the file C:\boot.ini

You can also add the safe mode option to a boot item on the boot.ini menu list.
