I Want To Be A Freelancer, But I Have A Problem...

Posted 07 July 2010 - 08:21 PM

Hi guys, firstly, I am not 100% sure if this thread belongs here, so if it doesn't, I will appreciate if it gets moved.

So I turned 18 this year and the first thing I did was to create my bank account. I have considered to be a freelancer for a long time now, and right now I need money badly before I start university next year because I need to buy a new laptop and a NAS system for my house. I would happily work as a freelancer with PHP or web design in general, so no problem there. The problem is the money and HOW I would receive it. I know Paypal is secure, I have my Paypal account and all those yaddas. The problem here is that Paypal doesn't allow you to receive payments in countries like the one I am in. I live in Bolivia, and I know Paypal doesn't support a way to receive payments in many other South American countries.

I am very, very ignorant when it comes to money moving around the world. I have my Paypal account, my bank account, and a virtual credit card. Everything I have done with them was to buy some digital music off a site to see if they worked properly (which they do). I just want a way to receive payments, which would be wonderful if my Paypal account allowed me but being in Bolivia ruins that plan totally. I just need a way for people to pay me in way it's not a hassle for them. Using Paypal was a very easy experience for me and it wasn't a hassle, and I wouldn't like my "clients" going to the bank to do transfers to my account and all that hassle.

So in short: Does anyone knows of a way in which people over the world can pay me for my services in a way that won't be a hassle for them? I need a secure way that will guarantee I will get my money too.

Thanks a bunch, and sorry if you didn't understand a word of what I said, I'm having a small headache which is affecting my English :P.

I don't know the legal ramifications behind it, but you could get a bank account in another country, & check into getting whatever business licenses that they require. That way you can accept the payments but continue to live & work where you are.

Other than that, you may just have to keep your work local.

Well you could use do a wire transfer using SWIFT, which is how companies like Western Union work. This is secure and international but there unfortunately is a charge. Have a look at this wiki page which lists some online only, cheaper alternatives also:

It's a direct competitor to PayPal and has similar rates. They have merchants that they partner with too but you can basically do the same payment funds sending as PayPal
