Hard Drive Problem

Posted 25 August 2006 - 10:50 AM

I'm at my buddies house right now and I'm supposed to diagnost a a dead hard drive. I went to his house and checked the thing out, and I really don't know whats going on.

The harddrive when access goes click click, and doesnt seem to spin at all. The Drive is a maxtor 5t030h3, endorsed by HP. What's going with the drive? Is it dead?

If you have a stethascope you can listen for spin up but I think your assessment is right on and that drive went KAPUT. I reccommend Segate drives now as they still have a 5 yr warrenty the 1 year everyone else offers just leaves a sour feeling in my loins.

Chances are that if you can't hear the discs spinning up when you start the computer than it is dead. I don't have good experiences with Maxtor; I perfer Seagate or Western Digital, especially since they now use the perpendicular writing.

You might be able to save it if it is spinning up. Boot to a different harddrive and go in to windows. You can try to check the HD for errors and fix them. If not, then you might as well get some cup coasters out of the HD.
