Rakudo Star: A useful, usable Perl 6 release

Posted 07 August 2010 - 04:43 PM

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere, so I thought I'd take the opportunity.

This is the biggest milestone to date for Perl 6. It's 10 years in the making. Some are calling Perl 6 an entirely different language from Perl 5. I have actually (and I have nothing to back this up, as I haven't actually used the language yet) heard people say that it has some Lispy features, which is enough to get my excited.

Rakudo is the currently the biggest, most complete, and most important Perl 6 implementation. It's on the Parrot VM, which is super cool. The Rakudo Start distribution comes with Parrot (only necessary if you don't already have it), Rakudo, and even a draft of the upcoming Perl 6 book written by the authors of Rakudo. The book looks pretty far along, and I intend to read it very soon.

Perl 6, namely Rakudo, is next on my languages to learn. It looks like it has a whole bunch of cool stuff that'll keep me interested. I wasn't sure if anyone knew about Rakudo Star and the current state of Perl 6, so I thought I'd post this. :)
