These troubleshooting tips have always solved problems for me:
* Check you are on the same subnet.
* Often, Windows Firewall is the problem. Open Security Center, modify settings for Window Firewall and enable File and Printer Sharing, then ping the other machine and this will confirm that there is no problem in the connectivity.
* Make sure you are not using a cross cable in case you are using a router.
* Make sure the clips on the LAN cable are firmly attached. Once, I was facing networking problems, I took out the cable, spun it around like a rope and plugged it back again - worked!

Yeah the guy that taught me how to make them, if I didn't make it perfect he would cut the end and make me do it again. There were some days that I would be there for 3 or 4 hours trying to get it right, because I had a hard time getting them to stay in the right order when I would push them into the end.
So I guess when it didn't work, I figured that it was something that I did wrong so I just cut the end and started over.
