desktop PC rebuild

Posted 13 August 2010 - 05:45 AM

Hi,

I was thinking of upgrading my desktop PC to allow it to run games to a higher standard than its current of generally low settings. I am new to this kind of thing and my experience only stretches to having bought and fitted new RAM onto this machine about a year ago. Basically I have decided that it needs completely overhauling because it is getting quite old and therefore the new stuff doesn't fit into my motherboard and basically what I need is for someone to tell me that everything I have earmarked as possibilities will be compatible with each other, so here goes:
ASUS M4A77D 770 ATX Motherboard - AM3 socket (tech specs)
Kingston Technology 2GB 667MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 DIMM (tech specs)
Novatech GeForce 9800GT SLI 1GB GDDR2 TV Out/DVI PCI-Express - Retail with PhysX, CUDA & 3D Stereo (tech specs)
and AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ processor (tech specs)

Any and all help much appreciated.

I'd upgrade your chip to one of the new Phenom II x4's. Also I would upgrade your memory to 4 gigs of DDR2 1066. Whatever's left over on a gfx card.

For your processor I would go with the AMD Phenom II X4 (as suggested). If you're only going to be using a single video card (no plans for SLI) then I would go with this MSI motherboard. 4 GB memory is the least you'll want so I would take a look at this OCZ Reaper DDR2 1066. Then you could go for this MSI TwinFrozr NVIDIA GTS 250 card.

If you're wanting an NVIDIA DirectX 11 card then you can look at this MSI TwinFrozr NVIDIA GTX 465, this is the card I have and I absolutely love it (well I actually have 2, SLI FTW). It's a little spendy but in my opinion it's definitely worth it.

EDIT: If you're planning on running 2 video cards then take a look at this MSI motherboard
