IE 8 Remove search bar

Posted 13 August 2010 - 06:10 PM

Dear, D.I.C.

I was wondering how to remove the address bar when using IE 8 or 7. I am trying to restrict access to web pages so my employees become more efficient but I have searched the internet and found no answers at all Please help any info will be greatly appreciated.

Things I tried but may work on IE 7 but not on IE 8.

regedit: User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbars\
Restrictions]
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
Toolbars\Restrictions]
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disable restriction, 1 = enable restriction)

HKCU_Software_Microsoft_Internet explorer_main

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbars\Restrictions]
"NoNavBar"=dword:00000001

I tried to change this registry entries but did not see this key in IE 8 but not sure about IE 7..

please help !!!!!!!!! :helpsmilie: :helpsmilie: :helpsmilie:

Well, this will likely not be an answer you find very helpful, but it will be an answer.

From what I have seen it isn't worth the effort to disable the address bar as people are resourceful. If they can't use the address bar they can still use File->Open and input the web address that way. If that doesn't work they will create an HTML file on their desktop and drag it onto the browser (opening it) and from there be able to do whatever functionality they have in the file (like getting to google - from which they can get almost everywhere else). As such the only sure fire way to keep people from using IE to view the web in an unrestricted fashion is to uninstall it.

Even there though people can bring a mobile browser with them on their USB flash drives or the like.

Another issue if they are using linux, or have a virtual machine in any way is that they can install a nix system on it and use its package manager to download and install a browser.

Basically, the only way I can think of to keep people off the web these days is to not give them any way to access it (No external networking).

Your probably right but all there access is limited except for one desktop link that takes them to a particular site. If I could just remove for that user when accessing that site it would be great. I know it's not that difficult to do on IE 7 but IE 8 is a different story.

Thank you for the feedback. :censored:

I gotta ask, why did you quote your original post in this thread?

BetaWar has a very valid point, if your employees want to surf the web they're going to get around the "I'm not going to show the address bar then" tactic, so you're more than likely wasting your time trying to figure out how to accomplish that particular task

Thank you for your input I think I will just block the web sites they mostly visit manually that seems like the only decent solution.

What exactly are you trying to block? Is there even a company reason for your employees to access any web sites? Why does the machines in question even have internet access? The reason I ask is that you can configure IPSec to block HTTP requests while still allowing email and such to work.

Here's a link that I used for a machine that had no reason to ever vist a website but needed network and email access. The nice thing is, you can then just open mmc and enable/disable it if the needs change.

Thank you for all your help on my post, I new u can use IPsec to block HTTP requests and that is a good idea however this setup is a linux terminal server no Active Directory in place. The employees have a limited account and all browser shortcuts have been removed and properly blocked however there is a desktop link that leads them to a certain site that needs to be used for general buisiness purposes what is happening is that by typing a URL in to the address bar when using that link on the desktop they can access other sites this is why I would like to remove the address bar so they cant type in other URL's. on IE 8 you cant remove the adress bar but by using kiosk mode for that particular site you can have IE popup with no address bar, so i may go that route and block the most used sites manually.

Thank you for your help D. I. C.
