Has anyone built a server stack?

Posted 08 September 2010 - 08:14 PM

Basically the title sums up my question, but I'll expound a little. Basically I am just wondering for wondering sakes, how to create a multiple server site, so if I am ever approached with a large scale site I have the knowledge to give them a site that can support the traffic loads.

Not sure if it's the answer to your question, but I have three servers running.

One is for email, one is for web & MySql, & the third is for the ticket system &/or testing. They are all configured to work individually & independently. The MySql answers to requests from the ticket system, the Apache points from the web server to the webmail/Apache on the mail server.

Not sure if that's what you are looking for, or if you want an example of load balancing between multiple Apache servers or something.

That's what I'm curious about. To be honest I haven't tried much of any multiple server situations, so the initial was fine information as well. But it is the load balancing that I am intrigued with.

You need to think again if you really want three servers for a startup. A single 1HE machine (like mine) can handle many thousand hits per day, especially if configured "for the price of two", and the housing center will likely triple costs for the three boxes. I would advice to put all components in one box first, and start dividing when you get enough traffic. Load balancing could be tried with Squid and seem not very difficult as long as all nodes use the same database.
