Windows 7 problem

Posted 24 September 2010 - 09:32 AM

Lets see if anyone can help me out.
I just got a problem start with my computer,
when ever it boots it freezes, no error or
anything, just stops moving mouse, no
Ctrl + Alt + Del, only thing to do is to
press the power button.

I've discover that a work around is to go
into Windows Safe Mode, go into the Device
Manager, and disable the Sound Card.

Then I can restart windows, and it will start
alright, and then i can turn on the Sound Card
and i'll have sound once again. No problems.
That is until i restart the Computer and i'll
get the problem again.

Any ideas what it might be?
There is also no errors in the event log

Thank everyone in advance.

Sounds to me like Windows 7 isn't compatible with your sound card. My only suggestion would be to get a new one that is compatible. The newer Sound Blaster cards should all work well enough with Windows 7.

EDIT: Here's a link from Microsoft that has a lot of cards listed that are compatible:

Well this is a laptop so changing cards isn't
really an option. On the other hand i've had
this computer for a while, and have had no
problems with it.

And I would really rather not have to do a
fresh Windows Install, cause i don't wanna
redownload Everything.

You really don't have to re-download anything if you backup what you have on your laptop that you want to keep. Don't you have a friend with an external HDD you could borrow?

Have you tried reintalling the driver for your sound card? Or get an update from producer' site?

Another(maybe bad) idea is to create 2 bat files: one that disables sound card from registry and shutdowns your computer and another one that enables sound card at startup.
I think you can disable/enable sound card changing values in this path : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\AudioSrv, but I haven't tried anything, so this is not a safe information. Before messing aroung with your registry, install a virtual machine and make some tests on it.

Haha...sounds like something I would do except I would probably create it using C# and then make it so the program is installed on the computer and runs in the background on startup. That way you don't actually see it working.
